Endemol Shine Latino and DNF Pictures Producing "El Clan" - The Story Behind Latin's Music's Biggest Scandal

August 3, 2017 - Endemol Shine Latino, a division of Endemol Shine North America, and DNF Pictures, are producing “El Clan,” a scripted series based on Maria Raquenel Portillo’s forthcoming autobiography that tells the behind-the-scenes story of the biggest scandal in Latin music history.

After more than a decade of silence, famed singer and actress Portillo, formerly known as Mary Boquitas, has decided to tell a first-hand account of being at the center of the controversy that rocked the Latin music world.

Portillo’s untitled book, which is being written with Emmy-winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author Maria Garcia, will serve as the backbone for “El Clan.” Endemol Shine Latino and DNF Pictures are currently in discussions with potential network/platforms for the series.

“After so many years of waiting, finally the moment has come, just the right time for me to finally be able to tell my true story,” says Portillo. “This project is not about vindicating myself, nor does it seek justice for anyone. Rather, it’s about healing wounds and closing open chapters so that others can benefit from my story. It’s been said that silence amounts to consent and it’s time for the truth to come out.”

"We are very excited to be a part of this project that finally gives a voice to Raquenel,” says Mauricio Piccone, Executive Vice President, Endemol Shine Latino. “This series will be an opportunity to finally tell the true story behind all the rumors and speculation that has been in the public eye for decades. Raquenel’s transparency, honesty and growth as a person has been remarkable and will allow us to tell this incredibly heart-breaking story of broken promises and lost dreams, all wrapped in the pop Latin music scene of the 80’ & 90’s.”

DNF CEO Dean Altit added, “This series will be an introspective journey of music, deception, hope and faith, where the main character will have to seek forgiveness from those that surround her and the most difficult thing will be learning to forgive herself.”

Portillo, fellow Mexican music star Gloria Trevi and controversial manager Sergio Andrade will be forever linked to the biggest scandal in Latin music
history.

Andrade gave Portillo and Trevi their respective starts in the music industry, casting them in the all-female teenage group, "Boquitas Pintadas." Trevi and Portillo both went on to enjoy individual music success, but their careers were derailed after both, alongside Andrade, were accused of corrupting minors, kidnapping and other offenses by Mexican authorities.

They left Mexico and several years later were found and arrested in Brazil and extradited back to Mexico. After a lot of legal wrangling and many headlines, Portillo was exonerated and released from Mexican prison and resumed her successful music and acting career.
In 1994, Portillo released her first solo album, "Mary Boquitas," which included hit song "A Contratiempo.” She later went into acting, starring in the Mexican TV series "Muchachitas como tu" and recently she was at the center of U.S. TV network We TV’s unscripted series “My Life is a Telenovela.”

Endemol Shine Latino oversees all Spanish-language production, format sales and development in both the U.S. and Mexico, as well as Spanish and Portuguese-language business across all of Latin America.

Endemol Shine Latino recently announced its producing an assortment of new U.S. Hispanic programming for Telemundo and Univision, including the first-ever Spanish-language edition of hit format “MasterChef” (“MasterChef Latino”) for Telemundo. In addition, Endemol Shine Latino is launching “Strictly Dancing” (“MiraQuién Baila”) and “Your Face Sounds Familiar” (“Tu Cara Me Suena”) with Univision and the highly anticipated scripted series “El Ganador” starring Nicky Jam for Telemundo.
